Hello BIOS Folks

Hi everyone. I'm new here, and new to the idea of BIOS modding in general. I'm going to see how far I can get. Mostly interested in AMI BIOSes at the moment, as well as SeaBIOS and similar projects.

My current hobby board of choice is the Biostar AM1MH, which is an AMD AM1 socket motherboard supporting the Kabini series of SoCs which came out just a few years ago. It has a very interesting AMI UEFI BIOS that I think has lots of stuff hidden in it, so I'm looking forward to hopefully getting a lot more out of this little $30 wonder.

If anyone knows anything about AMI UEFI BIOSes, especially ones for Biostar products, please point me in the direction of your wisdom!

Acer Aspire 8930 BIOS Mod needed!!

Hey, So I found an Acer Aspire 8930G, and i would love to reuse it and make something out of it, now i got lucky and i have the model that have P45 chipset which supports DDR3 8gb, but I need a bios to enable that as it's bios locked by acer, and if possible the ability to enable Uefi mode over legacy as I am trying to add a external GPU, most GPU now a days require UEFI BIOS.

I tried the 1.21 Bios that I found here, while I can't confirm if it removed the 4gb limit, i can say that i don't have uefi enabled nor visible as a toggle.

Intel Thin ITX CPU back-grade(?). Please...

Back when Intel first released their Thin-ITX motherboards, they released them with wide-ranging CPU support.

A BIOS update later and all processors over a 65w TDP were disabled. For a variety of reasons this 'upgrade' has caused untold headaches for myself alongside a number of others. The offending motherboard in question is the DQ77KB. While my desired CPU addition is the 3570k (just 8w TDP increase), many others have different CPU's, all which were once supported.

Please help. Any support or even info on how to tackle this myself would be GREATLY appreciated. Many desirable updates have been included in the more recent BIOS's:

Asus F555UB DVMT Pre-Allocated Option

$

Hello!!!

I'd like to ask you help to unlock or modify my bios to be able to change the DVMT pre-allocated memory.

I see in the bios menu and in the bios file that there are 2 forms for Graphics Configuration, the firs one (Form ID: 0x273C) is the one I can see in bios. I can change the DVMT to 32, 64,128, 256 and 512 MB; but I need 96MB.

The second form (Form ID: 0x273E) show me all the possible Memory settings and also the 96MB.
Is possible to show and use the second menu? Or enable it some way?

I tried to change the value also with the EFI Shell, with command sutup_var 0x2C5 0x3, but the shell give me the error 'error: offset not range'.

There are way to patch the bios file and flash it on the laptop?

Here the bios link: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/X555...BAS300.zip
I'll attach IFR text too..

ThankYou very much for helping me!

[THANKYOU] VN7-572G success

Hi All,
I wanted to drop a note and say thank you to the forum for being a source of information on modding Insyde BIOS.  I spent a lot of time reading through various search results which either provided the details or guided me to details located elsewhere.  I specifically want to thank espionage724 and Da Vinci Code for showing that it is possible, in this thread, https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Request-Acer-Aspire-VN7-572G?page=7 .
donovan6000's blog also provided a lot of detail.  I do have a professional background in development but, never in this area.

My goal was to be able to add a M.2 SSD NVMe to my laptop.  The motherboard had the socket but after installing the M.2 SSD, it would not show up in Device Manager or HWInfo.  I figured Acer had it disabled in the BIOS and did not see anything I could adjust in the BIOS.  Not taking no for an answer led me on the quest to get around the manufacturers restrictions.
I took a while to read and understand just about everything I could find as I did not want to risk bricking my laptop.

The approach I took in the end was:
  • Raspberry Pi GPIO, Pomona SOIC8 clip and flashrom
  • My bios chip (Macronix MX25L6473F) was different that espionage724's but, in the same family.  It was not specifically listed in flashrom either, although flashrom did identify it as one of the other chips in the family.
  • I was able to write out a copy of the image, verified with via 3 separate files and md5sum'd.
  • Tried a couple different approaches to getting the particular section of the ROM extracted and changed.
  • (I already identified where I needed to make the change when looking at the extracted FD file from the Acer BIOS update for v1.10)
  • My first attempt at a modded BIOS failed as it would not boot.  Lights came on, fan ran, HD spun, then went quiet, no BIOS logo splashscreen.
  • I was able to flash the backup image I made and got the laptop working.
  • I felt the issue was with the tool I was using and how it repacked the file.
  • My second attempt was successful, I could see the two settings I unsuppressed.  Which then allowed me to display the Advanced Tab and subsequently enabling the slot.
  • I was able to successfully add a Samsung 950 Pro 256GB.
I ended up using UEFITools to apply the change to the BIOS file and repack it.

Hope this provides some encouragement to those in the community who may be in a similar situation.

Mysterious UEFI Behavior on Biostar AM1MH with AMI v4 BIOS

$

I want to relate an interesting thing I discovered with an AMI v4 (IV) UEFI -based motherboard I purchased recently - after I clear CMOS, the next boot I get a screen that shows me I can overclock to 3.6ghz using a base clock multiplier change, whereas on every boot thereafter UEFI shows what the manufacturer actually claims for the board, which is that you can only underclock (2.2ghz and lower, down to 800mhz):

Picture of the overclock setting working

Picture of what the options are after reboot

My system setup's relevant bits are as follows:
CPU: AMD Athlon 5370
Motherboard: Biostar AM1MH Motherboard
UEFI Version: AKBAT411
RAM: 1x4gb Crucial DDR3 RAM
HDD: 250gb SATA II Western Digital 7200rpm

The UEFI is plainly not working as intended here, but what's most interesting to me is the possibility that the higher base clock values could be permanently enabled if only we could modify this AMI UEFI appropriately. I am a total novice at this, but I was able to get a little headway by downloading the UEFI file from Biostar (they give it to you as a .bss file) and renaming it as a .rom file. This ROM was readable by AMIBCP v. 4.53
.zip   AMIBCP 4.53.0050.zip (Size: 309.1 KB / Downloads: 0) , which gives me the following:

.jpg   Screenshot_4.jpg (Size: 113.94 KB / Downloads: 2)

The "USER" allowances were added by me; before they all said "Default."

Up to now, that is all the editing of the file I've done Blush . I haven't flashed it yet because I don't know if I will brick my device in so doing and I don't even know if it will accomplish what I want to do.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for unlocking the overclocking values in this BIOS? If you want to fiddle around with it  yourself you're certainly welcome to; I've included all the necessary data as attachments to this post. What's in it for you? I think if we can figure out how to do this here, then many Biostar BIOSes will benefit from the same modification; I think they tend to reuse this UEFI on multiple boards. This could be the start of a widespread edit helpful to many other people as well, especially since the AM1 community is starved for motherboards with good UEFIs.
